Johan Stockwell

Johan was born on 24 August, 1954 in Pretoria from Hester and Eric Stockwell .

He attended both primary and high schools in Pretoria and passed matric with a University entry qualification.

In 1973 he started a 4 year course for a Fine Art degree at the University of Pretoria and qualified in 1978 with the Bachelor of Arts Fine Art degree. He specialised in his final year in Graphic design.

Johan then started his art career as a Art Director with Devco Advertising agency. He quickly developed his very unique style and move from there to a Graphic design position where he worked on the designed marketing collateral of major blue chip clients in the South African market place.

Johan then from there took a position with a big corporate design firm where he received awards and recognition for his work from both local and international competitions.

After 5 years he then started up his own design consultancy where he and a small team services the needs of a broad spectrum of clients.

It was during the last few years that he met up with a business colleague who persuaded him to explore pottery and ceramics.

Johan tutored with Julian Keiser and Elsbeth Burkhalter to produce some fine sculptural and utilitarian ceramics. He mainly worked in freestyle hand building techniques and exhibited some of his work at the annual National Ceramics Bienales at the Pretoria Art Gallery during the late 1990's.

In December 2004 he again took up the brush and started painting in Oils. He has found a huge fascination with the small, lesser seen moments in nature and for the last year been exploring the infinite shapes, colours and and worlds that are around us.
